Ippudo's Harakado branch brings the celebrated Fukuoka-born tonkotsu ramen brand to the fifth floor of Tokyu Plaza Harakado, one of Harajuku's most architecturally striking commercial buildings. Founded in 1985 by Shigemi Kawahara, Ippudo has become one of Japan's most recognised ramen names, with outposts across Asia, North America, and Europe. The Harakado location serves the same rich, pork-bone broth that made the brand famous, prepared through a meticulous simmering process that yields a milky, full-bodied soup. The menu centres on two signature styles: Shiromaru, a classic creamy tonkotsu with a delicate, balanced flavour, and Akamaru, a richer version enhanced with a dash of blended miso and garlic oil. Both come with thin, straight noodles that hold their bite in the hot broth, plus chashu pork, wood ear mushrooms, and spring onions. Side dishes include gyoza, pickled vegetables, and extra noodle servings for those who want a refill without additional broth. The restaurant operates a ticket-based ordering system at the entrance, where diners choose their ramen style and any extras before being seated. The Harakado location benefits from the plaza's dramatic glass facade and rooftop terrace, offering views across the neighbourhood. Queues can be lengthy during peak hours, particularly on weekends, so visiting slightly before or after the main lunch and dinner rushes is advisable.
