Meiji Jingu on Omisoka is the night before hatsumode, not a fireworks square. The shrine’s usual pattern, still the one to use until the 2027 hatsumode page updates, is oharae at 14:00, joya-sai at 16:00, first drum at midnight, then open through the night. Saitan-sai is 07:00 on 1 January. Peak 22:00–03:00.
The forest is cold. Queues start on the gravel, not on Takeshita. This is the Harajuku gate of the shrine, JR Harajuku or Meiji-jingumae. Omotesando zelkova lights, if Keyaki-kai keeps 5 January, are still on that night. They are a different walk after you leave the torii.
Do not treat Shibuya scramble as the countdown. That crossing is not this shrine. Food stalls appear on the approach in most years. Bring a coat. The three-day hatsumode page is the one to reread in late December when the shrine posts Reiwa 9 hours.
